Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Sheriff’s Station Chief Remains in Hospital After Cancer Is Found
Tony F. Welch, commander of the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station and a local school board member, remained hospitalized Wednesday after doctors determined he has cancer of the lymphatic system.
Sgt. Bob Denham, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Station, said Welch was admitted to Antelope Valley Hospital last week because he was not feeling well. Welch’s physicians have said he has Hodgkin’s disease, Denham said.
The doctors are preparing a treatment plan, and Welch, 51, of Leona Valley, hopes to return to work in about a month, Denham said.
Welch, a 29-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Department, was promoted to captain and placed in charge of the Antelope Valley Station in 1992.
Last November, he was elected to the five-member board of trustees of the Antelope Valley Union High School District.
