A Story That’s Music to Her Ears

Share

Thank you for the refreshing article on Dion Grant and his musical motivation program for students (“The Music Moves Him,” Aug. 29). Finally, a voice is heard about the positive motivation of students through contemporary music.

I had the good fortune to observe Dion’s program at Gardena High, Jordan High, Emerson Jr. High, Madison Jr. High and Wright Middle School, all in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The special emphasis on respect for teachers and cooperation with school rules are only a part of his success. Student morale improves when he presides over a program at a time when it is essential to improve their self-esteem.

The measure of success in this program is Dion’s unique ability to convince students we still look up to them, still expect them to achieve academically, still respect them and that school really isn’t a “downer.” Hopefully, the business world will support this old-fashioned idea, which ultimately inspires students to academic achievement.
