A 2-year-old boy drowned in a Jacuzzi just a few feet away from where his parents were swimming in the adjacent pool, police said Saturday.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, the parents of Keith Bell found the toddler under water in the Jacuzzi at their home in the 10200 block of Plainview Avenue. The boy did not know how to swim, police said.

“Apparently the boy was being attended to by another young child” in the Jacuzzi as his parents swam in the larger pool, said Los Angeles Police Officer Dennis Watkins. “They just turned their back momentarily and he was under water.”

Neighbors said the Bell family had moved in about three months ago and used the swimming pool every weekend. They said they had never seen Keith in the pool unattended.

The toddler was pronounced dead at Verdugo Hills Hospital, according to Bob Collis, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The child abuse unit is investigating, which is routine, police said. Police are calling it an accident at this point.

“The parents were totally distraught,” Watkins said.
