Eight businesses have been cited for selling alcohol to minors in a sting organized to coincide with the beginning of the school year, police said Saturday.

The Brea Police Department’s Special Enforcement Detail enlisted a police cadet as an underage decoy to try to buy alcohol from 10 establishments in Brea and nine in Yorba Linda, including supermarkets, restaurants and convenience stores.

Police said eight businesses were cited, while two juveniles in Brea were detained at one store after they tried to get someone to buy alcohol for them. The juveniles were later released to their parents.

One man cited for selling alcohol to the decoy at a convenience store was also arrested on an outstanding warrant, police said.

Before sending out the decoy, the department sent letters to all businesses with liquor licenses in the two cities, reminding them of the law involving alcohol sales to minors, and warning of routine undercover stings used by the department. Establishments that weren’t cited will be sent follow-up letters letting them know the sting took place and that their employees followed the law.

Police said a representative of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Department was involved in the sting and will consider further action against the establishments, including fines and license suspensions.
