The Calvary Chapel Eagles kicked off their season with an impressive 28-0 victory over San Diego Horizon on Saturday at the first Fellowship Bowl.

All-purpose wide receiver Mark Echan was the Eagles’ workhorse, scoring two touchdowns and gaining 127 yards in 18 carries. Echan also led all receivers with 66 yards on four receptions.

Quarterback Waylan Kruse played an error-free game, passing for two touchdowns that covered 17 and 19 yards. The Eagles’ offensive line beat down the Panthers, providing Kruse with ample time to locate his downfield receivers.

The stingy Eagle defense allowed only 13 passing yards on three receptions, and had numerous gang tackles against the Panthers behind the line of scrimmage.

The game broke open in the second quarter when the Eagles, who had scored on an Echan three-yard touchdown run, recovered their own kickoff at the Panthers’ 19-yard line.

It took Kruse only one play to find wide receiver Aaron Fountain, who made a diving reception in the corner of the end zone. The two-point conversion attempt was successful as Echan caught Kruse’s pass to give the Eagles a 21-0 halftime lead.

Kruse threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Echan in the third quarter to seal the victory.
