Standing by Rob: Director-producer Rob Reiner (left) was honored at the ninth annual American Cinematheque Moving Picture Ball at the Beverly Hilton on Friday. Reiner’s wife, Michele Singer (middle), and his proud father, writer-director Carl Reiner (right), joined him at the gala sponsored by the group devoted to celebrating the movies. The event raised an estimated $325,000 for the group’s programs, including its restoration of the Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. The evening’s emcee was Billy Crystal. Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise and Nora Ephron were among the celebrities who paid tribute to Reiner.

‘Gump’ Sets Record: “Forrest Gump” was the top film at the box office over the weekend and also became Paramount’s top-grossing domestic film of all time. “Gump” took in an estimated $7 million, passing “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as the studio’s No. 1 film in domestic earnings. “Gump” has totaled $248 million in 68 days of release, nearly $6 million more than “Raiders.” Warner Bros.’ “Natural Born Killers” took the No. 2 spot with $5 million, according to early estimates. Paramount’s “Clear and Present Danger” was third with $4.5 million. New Line’s “The Mask” was fourth with $3.1 million and newcomer “Trial by Jury” from Morgan Creek took fifth with $2.9 million.

A Screenwriter Speaks: Screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala will receive the Writers Guild Foundation career achievement award Tuesday at an invitation-only event in Beverly Hills. But the public can hear the Academy Award-winning writer discuss her 20 screenplays (including “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day”) tonight at 7:45 at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. Producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory, who have worked with Jhabvala on 16 films, will also take part in the question-and-answer session. Tickets are $7.50 through the Writers Guild Foundation.

The Star Treks: Genevieve Bujold, who was supposed to be the newest “Star Trek” captain, has jumped ship. Bujold resigned from “Star Trek: Voyager,” scheduled to be launched next year on the new United-Paramount network. “After several days of production, she realized that the rigors of episodic television were too demanding,” said a statement from the show’s executive producers, who are currently looking for a replacement.

Popeye and his friends Olive Oyl, Bluto and Sweet Pea will be featured in Universal Studio’s newest Florida theme park. Universal’s Islands of Adventure is scheduled to open in 1999. . . . The band Green Day was forced to flee when fans rushed the stage during a free concert in Boston on Friday night. At least 20 people were arrested and 50 were treated for injuries. . . . Little computer whizzes take note: 8-year-old super twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of “Full House” are holding a press conference tonight about their new musical mystery video series, “The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley,” on America Online at 5 p.m.
