SANTA ANA : Schools Get Funds for Drop-Out Prevention

Share

Schools throughout the Santa Ana Unified School District have received more than $550,000 from the state Department of Education to fund drop-out prevention programs, a spokeswoman said.

The grant will be shared by 13 schools. Each will receive almost $43,000, district spokeswoman Diane Thomas said.

In awarding money, state officials asked school districts to show proof of the success of their drop-out programs. Santa Ana Unified has cut its drop-out rate by 45% since 1985, Thomas said.

The district’s programs include outreach consultants who meet with students, train staff to recognize at-risk youngsters, and update parents on their children’s performance. They also encourage students to take part in school clubs and sports, find them tutors and reward them for good attendance, Thomas said.

Schools receiving the money are: Adams, Diamond, Edison, Fremont, Lincoln and Madison elementary schools; Carr, Lathrop, McFadden and Spurgeon intermediate schools, and Saddleback, Valley and Santa Ana high schools.
