LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Record Number Seek Spot on Next Year’s Grand Jury
With recent events placing a spotlight on the Los Angeles County Grand Jury, a record number of people have asked to serve on the panel next year, Superior Court officials said Tuesday.
In all, 663 people have asked for applications for the 1995-96 grand jury, according to Gloria Gomez, the court’s juror services manager. “It’s unprecedented,” Gomez said. “In the past, no one has requested a grand jury application this early in the year.”
Superior Court officials had sought applications before a Nov. 4 deadline in part to increase the diversity of the 23-member panel, which will serve from July 1, 1995, to June 30, 1996.
The grand jury has gained unusual attention because of publicity about its role in high-profile cases such as those of O.J. Simpson and Michael Jackson.
Applicants must be citizens and at least 18 years old and have been county residents for at least a year.
