COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Colbert Takes Over for Greenwood

Andy Colbert was on the field for all 79 of UCLA’s defensive plays Saturday against Southern Methodist, but that was a special case. The Mustangs play a four-receiver, run-and-shoot type of offense.

Nebraska is another story. Colbert, the fifth defensive back in a five-back set, figured to play little on Saturday against the No. 2 Cornhuskers, who are basically a team that runs the ball and dares you to beat them.

Then Carl Greenwood broke his ankle in the third quarter of the SMU game, and suddenly Colbert had the status of a starter. He is a cornerback, and as a sophomore replacing a senior, figures to be one for a long time.

“I figure it’s a gift,” Colbert said. “I’m grateful for it.”

The winner of the Tommie Frazier look-alike contest this week is Eric Scott, who is emulating Frazier, Nebraska’s Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback, with the scout team. It’s mostly because of Scott’s quickness. Frazier has run for 214 yards and passed for 188 in two games. . . . The starting time for the UCLA-Washington State game at the Rose Bowl Sept. 24 has been fixed at 3:30 p.m. by Prime Ticket. . . . Skip Hicks, considered out for the season because of a knee injury, lined up for a few walk-through plays with the offense Tuesday.
