LOMITA : Separate School District Wins Hearty Support
Supporters of an independent school district here turned out to enthusiastically endorse their cause at a public hearing Tuesday in Lomita.
About 150 people attended the meeting, which was another step in the process of creating an independent district for about 2,500 Lomita schoolchildren.
Organizers of the drive say the Los Angeles Unified School District is too big and distant to address Lomita’s school needs.
The district would include three school sites, one of which would become a high school: Eshelman Avenue Elementary, Lomita Elementary and Fleming Middle School. It would serve students in kindergarten through high school.
On Nov. 2 the case for an independent district in Lomita will go before the county Committee on School District Organization. The committee is expected to make a recommendation to the state Board of Education at its Dec. 7 or Jan. 4 meeting.
