MARINA DEL REY : Channel Dredging Plan Rejected by Coastal Panel

Share

The California Coastal Commission on Thursday turned down a proposal to dredge tons of contaminated debris from the entrance channel to Marina del Rey and use it as fill in the Port of Los Angeles.

Commissioners voted 10-1 against the proposal at a meeting in Eureka. The plan was presented to the commission by the Army Corps of Engineers in July.

The commission said the corps failed to outline a long-term solution for handling the untreated sewage, trash, oil and other debris that is flushed from city streets into Ballona Creek channels and then into the marina. U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials expressed concerns that the project could hurt endangered species.

Commission spokesman James R. Raives said the corps is expected to resubmit its proposal today. If it does, the commission could vote on the issue again next month. However, the commission vote may have stopped the project because the corps says it needs to dredge before the federal fiscal year ends Sept. 30 or lose $1.7 million allocated for the project.
