Salem, Va., is the new home of the Colorado Rockies’ Class-A affiliate in the Carolina League. Salem replaces Central Valley of the California League, which served as the Rockies’ Class A club for the last two seasons.

Track and Field

World-record holder Sergei Bubka won the pole vault at 19 feet 4 1/2 inches at the Toto International Super Track Meet in Tokyo.

Bubka, a four-time world champion who has set the record 35 times, made three tries at 20-2 1/4, but came up short each time. Pat Manson of the United States was second after clearing 19-2 1/2, his personal best.

Colin Jackson of Great Britain turned in the day’s best performance, winning the 110-meter hurdles with the world’s fastest time this year, 12.98 seconds, and countryman Linford Christie beat Dennis Mitchell of the United States in the men’s 100 with a winning time of 10.02 seconds.

In the women’s competition, Fernanda Ribeiro of Portugal ran the year’s second-fastest 5,000 meters, winning in 15 minutes 6.91 seconds.

Algerian 1,500-meter specialist Hassiba Boulmerka won the 800 meters in 2:00.61.

Hockey

Defenseman Anatoli Fedotov of the Mighty Ducks has retired, citing personal reasons for his decision, General Manager Jack Ferreira said. Fedotov, 28, who played only three games for the Ducks last season, will return to his native Russia.
