LOS ANGELES : Council Action Postponed on Jobs Training Grant

Share

City Council action was postponed Friday on a $3-million federal grant for a youth job training and placement center in South-Central Los Angeles when the council meeting was canceled because of a quorum.

Among the members who were absent were Mark Ridley-Thomas and Rita Walters, both of whom had previously raised questions about a federal decision to award a contract, without seeking bids, to the Community Build riot recovery organization.

The private Leimert Park-based agency, which has a limited track record in undertaking job training projects, plans to serve youngsters in neighborhoods in Ridley-Thomas’ and Walters’ council districts.

The two council members had no comment on their absence. Councilman Mike Hernandez, a proponent of the program, said the pair had indicated they did not want to vote in favor of the project but did not want to see it killed, either.
