De La Hoya Has Virus, Cancels Fight
Oscar De La Hoya has been forced to cancel the first defense of his World Boxing Organization lightweight title, on Oct. 8 against John Avila, because of a virus.
“He’s feeling very weak and has been unable to train for at least a week,” said De La Hoya’s trainer, Robert Alcazar.
De La Hoya (14-0, 13 knockouts) and Avila (19-1-1, 11 knockouts) were to have fought at the Grand Olympic Auditorium.
The bout might be rescheduled for Nov. 18, when De La Hoya was scheduled to fight an opponent to be named on the Roy Jones-James Toney undercard.
