‘Melrose’ May Be the Place, but Not for Aimee Mann

Share

Dinosaur Jr., Paul Westerberg, Aimee Mann and Divinyls all contributed new songs for an album of music tied to the hit Fox soap “Melrose Place.”

So you gotta figure that they’re all big fans of the show, right?

“I’ve never seen it,” confesses Mann, whose “That’s Just What You Are” is the opening track on the album.

So why did Mann give her song to the collection?

“I asked who else was on it and they said Paul Westerberg, so I said, ‘great,’ ” she says. “Then I asked friends if they watched the show, and people who said they did (watch it) were pretty cool, so that was my research.”

Mann, who is in Boston working on her second solo album, says she still has no idea how well her song, which features background vocals by Squeeze’s Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, fits into the show’s beautiful Hollywood people theme.

“I leave that up to the producers,” she says. “If they feel it has something to do with any sort of plot point, then great. Better my music than someone else’s.”

The album is due in stores Oct. 18 from Giant Records.
