SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A man suspected of raping and robbing two teen-agers working at a Camarillo yogurt shop was arrested by Ventura County sheriff’s deputies and booked into County Jail, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Saturday.

Christopher Bass, 21, of Goleta was arrested about 7:15 p.m. Friday as he was leaving work at Just Bagels in Agoura Hills, said Lt. Craig Husband of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Bass is suspected of sexually assaulting the 17- and 19-year-old females at gunpoint during an Aug. 29 robbery of a yogurt shop on Carmen Drive in Camarillo.

The victims reported being attacked by a masked gunman, who, they said, took their clothes and threatened them after the assault.

Because one of the victims saw the suspect before he pulled on a mask, she was able to give a detailed description that matched that of a man who robbed as many as 14 restaurants and pizza parlors along the Ventura Freeway in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, Husband said.

Ventura County deputies were assisted by Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies in a two-week investigation that linked the suspect to four robberies in the Goleta area and at least three in Thousand Oaks, a Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

The break in the case came when detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigating a robbery in Agoura Hills gave Ventura County investigators a picture of Bass, Husband said. One of the women was able to identify Bass in a photo lineup, he said.

During the investigation, more than 30 detectives from the Santa Barbara and Ventura county departments conducted surveillance, according to Husband. On Friday, investigators said they had enough information to arrest Bass at his workplace. Employees at the shop said Bass had been a manager at the shop since June.

Bass was booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of robbery and multiple counts of sexual assault, a jail spokesman said. Husband said that more than $2,000 in cash was found in a search of his residence, and detectives are trying to determine whether the cash can be linked to any of the robberies.
