SIMI VALLEY : Free Composting Workshop Planned

Share

Hoping to reduce yard waste and free up landfill space, Simi Valley officials will hold a free workshop Saturday to teach back-yard composting.

Instructors will explain a variety of methods to recycle plant material, including worm composting, special landscaping techniques and basic composting.

The event is open to any Simi Valley resident, said Joe Hreha, deputy director of environmental services.

“Anyone--from a college student to someone who lives in an apartment to a person who lives on 20 acres--can benefit from this,” Hreha said.

The goal of the program is to help the city meet a state-required 25% cut in waste by 1995, Hreha said. Yard waste makes up 28% of the garbage sent from Simi Valley to local landfills.

Two composting workshops are held each year.

This event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Rancho Tapo Community Park. For more information, call 583-6874.
