Share

A Port Hueneme man was in jail Monday after being arrested on suspicion of abusing his 17-year-old girlfriend, stealing a car and possessing a pipe bomb.

Port Hueneme police arrested Richard A. Frenes, 25, Sunday afternoon while he was moving out of his apartment in the 100 block of Ann Avenue, according to Detective Christopher T. Graham.

Graham said Frenes’ girlfriend told police that Frenes had injured her and that he was keeping a stolen car in the garage of their apartment. When police searched the trunk of the car, a red 1985 Chevrolet Camaro, they found a bomb in a shoe box, Graham said.

Graham said Frenes claimed he was keeping the bomb for a friend.

Deputy Bob Garcia of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department bomb team said the seven-inch plastic-pipe bomb was removed from the scene and dismantled.

The apartment building was evacuated for about three hours Sunday while police removed the bomb.

Frenes, who is scheduled to be arraigned today, was in jail Monday evening in lieu of $7,500 bail.
