Trustees for Cypress School District Revise Student Testing Procedures

Share

The Cypress School District Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to revise procedures for pupil testing.

The changes, effective this school year, include no longer giving proficiency tests to second-grade students and eliminating the California Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) for first-grade students.

District officials said the second-grade proficiency test is not state-required and that “the present test is not a true indicator of proficiency.”

In a memo to the district, the staff also said, “First-grade test scores are not needed and do not usually reflect a child’s progress in the academic subjects.”

Other test changes approved by the school board include purchasing and using updated CTBS tests for students in the second through sixth grades.

The district’s CTBS tests traditionally have been administered in the spring, but starting in the 1995-96 school year, the tests will be given in the fall.
