16-Vehicle Pileup Injures 1, Jams Traffic

A chain-reaction, 16-vehicle pileup caused one minor injury and a long traffic tie-up on the westbound Ventura Freeway on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The problem started about 5:20 a.m. when a motorist made an unsafe lane change on the freeway’s downhill grade near Las Virgenes Road, and five cars hit each other, said California Highway Patrol Officer Dave King.

As other motorists tried to avoid that wreck, they caused six other accidents as cars rear-ended each other in the fog, King said.

The only reported injury occurred when one of the drivers, who was not wearing a seat belt, hit her head against her windshield, authorities said.

That motorist was not hospitalized, authorities said.

Two lanes of traffic were blocked for more than an hour as authorities cleared up the accident, King said.
