Dickerson, Ryan Head O.C. Fame List

Former Angel pitcher Nolan Ryan, who retired in 1993 after setting major league records for strikeouts (5,714) and no-hitters (seven), and former Ram running back Eric Dickerson, who set an NFL record with 2,105 yards rushing in 1984, head the list of 1994 nominees for the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame.

Induction ceremonies are Nov. 20 at the Hall of Fame on the southeast side of Anaheim Stadium. Four modern-era athletes and two pre-1965 athletes will be picked from 32 nominees.

The other modern-era nominees are former Rams Jack Snow, Rich Saul, Mike Lansford and Johnnie Johnson, former Angels Brian Downing and Clyde Wright, former Olympic track athletes Mary Decker Slaney and Steve Scott, former New England Patriot Randy Vataha, former coaches Don Johnson (Cypress basketball), Bob Boyd (USC, Chapman basketball) and Dick Stricklin (Golden West basketball), former UCLA basketball player John Vallely and former Troy High School basketball standout Mark Wulfemeyer.

The pre-1965 nominees: Dick Tucker (Orange Coast football coach), Elmer Combs (Huntington Beach High basketball), George Latka (boxer/referee), Merlin Volske (jockey), Buck Beebe (Anaheim High track), Bill Ficker (yachtsman), Hugh Faulkner (Anaheim High basketball), John Fouch, Chuck Page and Keith Luhnow (Santa Ana College football), Earl Engman (high school coach, referee), Don Perkins (Chapman basketball coach), John McDonough (NFL official), Ted Shipkey (Fullerton High football), Josephine Cruickshank (tennis) and Tex Oliver (Santa Ana College football coach).
