PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Assistants Say They Weren’t Fighting

Raider assistant coaches Tom Walsh and Bill Meyers are threatening legal action over a story that they fought in the Coliseum press box during the Raiders’ 38-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 11.

“All I said was, ‘Run the damn ball,’ ” Meyers, the offensive line coach, said of his confrontation with Walsh, the offensive coordinator. “We have plenty of witnesses.”

Coach Art Shell later took the blame for not running the ball enough in that game.

Some versions of that feud grew to include a fist-swinging brawl and the involvement of owner Al Davis.

Walsh and Meyers are demanding a retraction from Fred Edelstein, a former ESPN reporter who publishes a pro football newsletter.

Final reflection on the Raiders’ 0-2 start: Running back Harvey Williams, asked about the mood on the club, said, “The first two weeks around here, it was like somebody’s mom died.” . . . Defensive end Willie Broughton, sidelined because of an elbow injury since the preseason, is participating fully in practice and is close to being ready for game action.
