GLENDALE : Police Searching for Hate-Crime Vandals

Share

Glendale police were searching Friday for the vandals responsible for spray-painting the city’s only synagogue, the Temple Sinai, with swastikas.

The motive behind the hate crime remained unclear. But authorities believe it was committed between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Thursday by someone who lives in Glendale.

“It’s hard to imagine someone coming from outside of the city to do it,” said police spokesman Chahe Keuroghelian. “Why take time to do this in Glendale?”

The synagogue’s rabbi, Carole Meyers, helped draft a plan to combat hate crimes that was publicized earlier this week.

Strangers phoned the temple Friday to offer words of support before Sabbath service in the evening, she said.

Police are asking the public for help in solving the case and are patrolling the area around the synagogue more frequently.

It is a felony to commit a hate crime against a place of worship, punishable by up to a year in prison, Keuroghelian said.
