A summary of selected City Hall actions this week affecting Central Los Angeles.

CITY COUNCIL

* POLICE DONATION: Accepted a $15,500 donation from the Patrons of the Children organization to be used to modify the juvenile division’s victim interview rooms at the Police Department’s Parker Center headquarters. The three small rooms currently used would be converted into two soundproof rooms with improved decor. Police say they anticipate that the changes will put victims more at ease.

* NUISANCE ALLEY: Declared the alley and walkway bounded by Redondo Boulevard, 21st Street, Cloverdale Avenue and Bangor Street a public nuisance as a result of recurring problems of drug dealing, vandalism and illegal dumping, and instructed the city engineer to initiate proceedings to close it.

* REWARD OFFERED: Approved offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the Aug. 28 murder of Randolph Miguel, who was stabbed to death while working at the Shell gas station at 86th Street and Western Avenue. Shell is also offering a $10,000 reward.

* COMMUNITY CUP: Approved the closure of Hope Street between 3rd and 4th streets, and the closure of the curbside lane in front of the First Interstate Tower on 5th Street from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for the third annual Ketchum-Downtown YMCA Community Cup and street festival. The Community Cup consists of 50 teams of 12 employees from the corporate, civic and community service sectors. Teams will compete in 15 athletic events, and each will donate $1,000 to the YMCA.

* MASK FESTIVAL: Approved the closure of Wilshire Boulevard between Cochran and Cloverdale avenues, the closure of Cochran Avenue between Wilshire and 8th Street, and the closure of Cloverdale Avenue between Wilshire and 8th Street on Oct. 16 from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Craft and Folk Art Museum’s Festival of the Masks.

How South-Central and Eastside City Council representatives voted on selected issues.

* SENIORS AID: Approved a compromise that will give an extra $65,000 in funds from the California Department of Aging to Central, South-Central and Southwest Los Angeles Aging Service Agencies to fund recovery services for senior citizens affected by the Jan. 17 earthquake. The bulk of the $2.2 million from the state department will still go to centers in the San Fernando Valley, but under this plan funding for the centers in the city’s core will increase from $75,000 to $140,000. Passed 11-1. Voting yes: Jackie Goldberg, Mike Hernandez, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Rudy Svorinich Jr. Absent: Richard Alatorre, Rita Walters.
