OH DANNY BOY: Sometimes prosecutors’ compliments come from the people they send to prison. Mission Viejo socialite Danny Hernandez, now serving a six-year sentence in a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme, wants a new attorney to handle an appeal for him. . . . Hernandez complains that he got a raw deal in the plea agreement his lawyers worked out with Assistant U.S. Atty. Steve Wolfe. Hernandez has written from prison that his lawyers let Wolfe “bully” them: “I feel I was left out in the cold as far as my plea agreement.”

CAN’T DUCK THIS SHOT: The Visiting Nurse Assn. of Orange County, a nonprofit home health group, is trying to spread the word that it’s flu season again. So it’s kicking off its annual flu shot campaign by lining up some mighty high-profile people to immunize today: the players and coaches of The Mighty Ducks. . . . You can find a flu clinic in your neighborhood by calling (800) 616-SHOT.

FAST THROWER: How would you like a pitcher with these stats: 145 strikeouts in 60 innings--then he hits .687 when it’s his turn to bat. Those are the Little League numbers for 12-year-old Jared Fast of Huntington Beach, 5-8, 210 pounds. . . . He took first place for his age group last weekend in Dallas at the Major League Baseball’s pitch, hit and run finals for youngsters. Fast’s reward: a trip for two to next year’s All-Star game in Texas--if the baseball strike is settled.

NO JOKE HERE: If you’re tired of bad lawyer jokes, here’s a brighter look at the local bar. The Orange County Bar Assn. has just been awarded the prestigious Pro Bono Service award for public service by the California Bar for its efforts to assist victims of last year’s Laguna Beach fires. . . . The bar’s fire relief task force trained more than 100 attorneys in the basics of disaster legal services. Those attorneys then gave free legal advice through the Disaster Application Center in Laguna Beach.
