Wilson Rescinds Overtime Waiver: The emergency waiver of a state overtime requirement had been issued to relieve traffic congestion after the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake. Gov. Pete Wilson asked the Legislature to pass new legislation that would permanently repeal the state’s daily overtime provision. The existing law requires employers to pay workers overtime whenever they work more than eight hours in a day. Wilson exempted Southland employers from the requirement after the quake as a way to encourage flexible work schedules. He said he rescinded the waiver because emergency conditions no longer exist in the Southland, but he encouraged lawmakers to permanently repeal the requirement to accommodate the needs of both employers and employees.
