Homeowner’s Exemption Service Is Offered Free
Responding to numerous calls about mail solicitations, Los Angeles County Assessor Kenneth P. Hahn cautions homeowners against paying a fee to organizations for filing homeowner exemption forms.
“The county assessor’s office provides this service free of charge,” Hahn said.
“Under California law, property owners are entitled to an annual $7,000 reduction in the taxable value of their principal residence,” he said. “To receive the exemption, a homeowner must complete a proper exemption claim form, which the assessor’s office automatically sends to all new homeowners soon after their purchase.”
The forms are also available at any of the assessor’ regional offices.
Property owners can check their tax bills to determine whether or not they are currently receiving a homeowner’s exemption.
