White Powers Arizona Past Oregon State : Pacific 10: His three touchdown passes fuel a 30-10 victory, but the Wildcats give up 185 rushing yards.

Dan White threw three touchdown passes and No. 6 Arizona, despite having trouble stopping Oregon State’s running game, remained unbeaten with a 30-10 victory Saturday night.

Oregon State (1-3, 0-2 Pacific-10 Conference) ran for 185 yards, the most in 28 games against the Wildcats (4-0, 2-0). Arizona had been giving up only 36.3 yards per game on the ground, second-best in the nation.

“They had us on the run,” Arizona coach Dick Tomey said. “I’m not sure there’s a team we’ve played in the last three years that had us on the run like they did in the first half. They very easily could have won.”

But Arizona’s defense recovered three fumbles, leading to field goals by Steve McLaughlin. Chris Lopez caused two of the fumbles and Tedy Bruschi recovered two.

White connected on first-half scoring pass plays of 47 yards to Richard Dice and 13 yards to Lamar Harris for a 20-10 lead at halftime. McLaughlin had 49- and 25-yard field goals.

McLaughlin added a 32-yarder midway through the final quarter, and Dice caught a 34-yard pass from White with 2:46 remaining.

The Beavers rushed for more yards than any team against Arizona since Arizona State gained 192 in the final game of 1991. Oregon State also was the last team to gain more than 200 yards against the Wildcats, getting 238 in 1991.

Quarterback Donald Shanklin carried 12 times for 85 yards, including a 51-yard run that set up Randy Lund’s 26-yard field goal. He passed for 101 yards, completing four of eight.

His longest completion was a 38-yard pass play to J.J. Young. He also went to Young on a 33-yard pass.

Shanklin’s long run surpassed the longest ground gain Arizona gave up all last year--Young’s 33-yarder.

Ontiwaun Carter gained 114 yards on 26 carries for Arizona. White completed 14 of 21 passes for 194 yards.

Arizona drove to the Beavers’ 20 on the game’s opening drive before Buster Elahee sacked White for a 12-yard loss on third down. That forced the Wildcats to settle for McLaughlin’s 49-yard field goal.

McLaughlin’s second field goal came about 90 seconds later, after Lopez stripped the ball from Young.
