COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Rallies to Defeat Pasadena

Backup quarterback Eric Hannah hit James Hartford for two touchdown passes in the last three minutes, including a 10-yard scoring pass with 28 seconds left, to lift Fullerton to a 42-41 Mission Conference victory over host Pasadena on Saturday night.

Hannah, a freshman from Servite, replaced starter Mark O’Brien after O’Brien was injured after losing a fumble in the third quarter. Hannah completed 15 of 20 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns in 18 minutes. Fullerton trailed, 35-23, entering the fourth quarter, and 41-29 with four minutes left.

Hannah’s heroics helped overcome a 311-yard, four-touchdown performance by Pasadena’s Saladin McCullough. McCullough returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, and rushed for three touchdowns.

Steve Correa had 10 catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns for Fullerton (1-1-1), which had 504 yards in total offense. Fullerton led, 10-0, after one quarter.

Michael Jacot ran for 82 yards in nine carries and scored two touchdowns for the Hornets. Pasadena is 1-1-1.

In other Mission Conference games:

Mt. San Antonio College 46, Orange Coast 24--Quarterback Cody Lee Smith passed for a school-record 558 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another as Mt. San Antonio College beat host Orange Coast.

Smith, a sophomore, was eight yards shy of the conference mark of 566 yards, set by Jorge Munoz of Southwestern College against San Diego Mesa in 1993.

Smith, who finished with 600 yards in offense, completed 27 of 47 attempts. He threw one interception.

“He couldn’t even pass before he came here,” Mt. San Antonio Coach Bill Fisk said jokingly.

The Mounties (2-0-1) rolled up 714 yards overall. They led Orange Coast, 26-24, early in the third quarter before pulling away on a one-yard touchdown run by Alex Brown late in the quarter and two fourth-quarter scores--a 54-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Yoda Martin with 9:14 remaining and a Kinsasha Lewis five-yard touchdown run with 2:04 left.

Both teams scored on their first plays from scrimmage. Orange Coast (0-3) took a 7-0 lead when tailback Jeff Clayton hit wide receiver Chris Jackson on a 65-yard option pass. Then Smith began his record-breaking performance with an 80-yard scoring pass to tight end Marvin Allen to tie the score.

El Camino 44, Golden West 27--Zak Swoopshire scored three touchdowns and Leandrew Childs scored two as El Camino pounded host Golden West.

Golden West (0-3-1) closed the margin to 24-19 after Mark Crowley caught an 11-yard pass from Brian Schneider, Crowley’s third touchdown of the night.

Swoopshire scored the first of his touchdowns on a 13-yard pass from Sarkisian with 7:52 left in the third quarter. But Golden West cut the lead to 30-27 when John Sears caught a 10-yard pass from Schneider 11 seconds into the fourth quarter.

El Camino (3-0) dominated the rest of the game. With 13:12 left in the game, Swoopshire, who rushed 10 times for 107 yards, scored again on a 39-yard run.

Palomar 27, Saddleback 6--Quarterback Gregg Wilbur completed 25 of 39 passes for 261 yards and one touchdown to lead host Palomar past Saddleback.

It was Palomar’s special teams and defense that established an early lead. Two Alidad Compani field goals and a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown by Troy Baker gave Palomar a 13-0 halftime lead.

Saddleback’s only score came on a one-yard dive by quarterback Aron Garcia with 4:49 left.

In the Long Beach City water polo tournament:

Orange Coast wins three--Orange Coast scored two goals in the final period to hold off El Camino, 12-10, in a pool-play game. Shad Wicker and David Kasa each had four goals for Orange Coast (7-5-1).

In an earlier game, Shad Wicker scored four goals for the second consecutive tournament game in a 12-10 victory over San Diego Mesa.
