A security guard remains hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after he was shot during an apparent robbery attempt.

Louis Lineras, 40, of Los Angeles, was taken to UCLA Medical Center following the 10:40 a.m. attack Monday in the parking lot at 2121 Cloverfield Blvd., said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Gary Gallinot.

Police said that just before the shooting, Lineras was seen talking to four men in a late model American car. Words were exchanged, and one of the suspects pulled out a large caliber, semi-automatic handgun and began firing, police said.

Lineras ran toward the office complex as the gunman continued to fire. He staggered through the entrance of the General Telephone Federal Credit Union and collapsed.

Lineras underwent surgery for three gunshot wounds, Gallinot said.

The suspects sped off in the light yellow or beige automobile. A few streets away, in the 2400 block of Oak Street, at least one of the suspects stole a yellow, four-door 1989 Mercury Sable from a woman, police said. The unidentified owner of the car was unhurt.
