Exhibit on Silent Film’s Shipman

Silent film pioneer Nell Shipman is being remembered at an exhibit at the Doctors’ House Victorian Museum in Glendale on Sundays through Oct 23.

The maverick filmmaker starred in, wrote, directed and produced many early movies from 1912 to 1924. Her film “Something New” (1920) will be shown continuously, and memorabilia including family photos, movie stills, posters and other items will be displayed.

Shipman was a strong, self-willed heroine both on and off screen. She was noted for her forward-thinking attitude regarding the humane treatment of the many animals that appeared in her films. She once lived in the structure that houses the museum.

“The Silent Screen & My Talking Heart,” Shipman’s autobiography, was published recently. The exhibit, sponsored by the Glendale Historical Society, will run from 2 to 4 p.m. The Doctors’ House Museum is located in Brand Park, 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.
