The Memphis Belle (Discovery Channel, Sunday at 9 p.m.) is William Wyler’s notable, rarely seen 1944 documentary about our bombing missions over Germany during World War II.

The Jazz Singer (TMC, Thursday at 7:30 a.m.), the 1927 film that ushered in sound, is actually mostly a silent movie, which ironically is why it’s superior to its talkie remakes. Al Jolson stars as a man torn between his dream of becoming a popular singer and the dictates of his religion; the material is so outrageously sentimental it needs all the eloquence and detachment that only images can give it.
