ORANGE LEAGUE FOOTBALL : King’s Three Touchdowns Help Savanna Win, 26-7

Daven King rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns on Savanna’s first three possessions as the Rebels beat Magnolia, 26-7, in an Orange League opener Thursday at Western High School.

King, who scored on runs of seven, 89 and four yards, said the victory was important for the Rebels (5-1, 1-0) because their 16-game winning streak was stopped last week by Newport Harbor.

“We wanted to go 5-0 in (nonleague play), but we couldn’t get it,” King said. “It’s like a clean slate for us to start all over.”

King’s seven-yard touchdown capped Savanna’s opening drive, which covered 81 yards in 11 plays.

After Magnolia punted to Savanna’s 11, King swept right on the Rebels’ next play, cut across the field to the left sideline and faked out Magnolia defenders Kris Cabunat and Sean Roy on his way to an 89-yard touchdown with 3 minutes 40 seconds left in the first quarter.

King gave Savanna a 20-0 lead when he capped a 15-play, 67-yard drive with a four-yard run with 7:16 left in the first half.

Magnolia quarterback Robert Nicols scored the Sentinels’ only touchdown on a two-yard run with 19 seconds left in the half, as Magnolia drove 64 yards in 1:14.

The Rebels had 395 yards offense, and held Magnolia (1-5, 0-1) to 108 yards offense. Alex Carbajal led the Rebels with three sacks and an interception.
