MALIBU : City Official Quits for Long Beach Job
Planning Director Robert Bernard has announced his resignation to become a zoning officer with the city of Long Beach.
Bernard, who has been Malibu’s planning director since its incorporation in 1991, made the announcement Monday. Among significant achievements during Bernard’s tenure was his integral role in helping Malibu establish rebuilding guidelines and procedures for the 268 residents who lost their homes in the November, 1993, firestorm.
“As terrible as the disaster was, it did a lot to mature Malibu as a city and gave the staff the opportunity to do what the staff is hired to do . . . quickly,” said Bernard, 43. “It was good for the city because it put the authority with the people who had to be most interactive with the residents.”
Bernard began his career as a planner with Long Beach in 1973 and spent 13 years there before taking jobs in the planning and building departments of Manhattan Beach and Rancho Palos Verdes. He will begin work in Long Beach on Oct. 31.
Malibu Senior Planner Joyce Parker-Bozylinski has been appointed interim planning director until a new director is hired, said City Manager David N. Carmany.
