BREA : Council to Consider Detached Homes Plan

Share

A request to construct small, single-family residences instead of townhouses as part of the 50-acre downtown redevelopment project is on the City Council agenda this week.

Under a 1991 agreement between the city and Baywood Development Group, 146 townhouse units were planned for Ash Street and Walnut and Madrona avenues in the downtown area.

But subsequent declines in the real estate market, especially in townhouse and condominium prices, persuaded the developer that it would be more economically feasible to construct detached dwellings.

Now Baywood is proposing to build 96 units that are described as a “hybrid” between townhouses and single-family dwellings.

Construction of the homes would proceed in four phases, starting in early 1995.

The council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
