SIMI VALLEY : Search to Start for New Festival Site
As a Simi Valley developer prepares to build houses on a vacant lot where the city’s annual carnival is held, the City Council on Monday agreed to begin searching for a new site for the festivities.
For the past six years, the Ferris wheels and rodeos of Simi Valley Days have drawn crowds to the corner of Madera Road and Los Angeles Avenue.
Expecting the land to be developed in 1989, the city formed a committee to look for other places to hold the annual festival. The most promising site was Tapo Canyon Park.
Then the recession hit and the 67-acre Madera Road lot remained vacant.
Now Griffin Industries plans to build 271 houses on a portion of the property, and the council has agreed to convene a seven-member committee to look for another site.
The committee will include one member each from the City Council, the Rancho Simi Parks and Recreation District, Simi Valley Days Committee, Neighborhood Council, a local service club and two at-large members of the public.
