Fullerton : Council Won’t Reverse Housing Project OK

Share

City Council members on Tuesday refused to reconsider their approval of a controversial low-income housing project.

Residents asked the council to reverse last month’s decision to allow the construction of a 27-unit apartment complex and a two-level parking structure at 2200 E. Chapman Ave. They argued that the project would create traffic problems. But the council voted 4 to 1 to deny their request.

Councilman Chris Norby cast the lone dissenting vote.

Mayor A.B. (Buck) Catlin and City Council members Don Bankhead and Molly McClanahan were replaced in a recall election Tuesday. The new council members--Jan M. Flory, Conrad DeWitte and Peter Godfrey--will take office next Tuesday.

Residents wanted the city to conduct a traffic study to determine the effect the project would have on the neighborhood, but city officials said the study is not necessary.

Officials conceded that the project, which was approved in September despite opposition from several neighbors, will increase traffic on Chapman Avenue. However, Catlin said that the traffic increase is not expected to be significant enough to warrant serious concern.
