A summary of selected City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* PROPERTY DAMAGE SUIT--Authorized the city controller to pay $459,806 to James and Shirley Meinel for damage to their Hollywood Hills home caused by the Bureau of Street Maintenance. The Meinels’ home partially slid off its foundation as maintenance bureau crews were removing mud, rocks and debris from Mulholland Drive after heavy rains last year. The controller was also authorized to pay $435,194 to the Meinels’ lawyers.

* TREE PLANTING--Approved the closure of Genesee Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets on Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a tree planting program.

HOW THEY VOTED

* PHOENIX HOUSE--Approved a resolution that will allow Phoenix Houses of California Inc. to receive $10 million in California state bonds for the construction and remodeling of two drug rehabilitation centers, one at 500 Ocean Front Walk in Venice and the other at 11600 Eldridge Ave. in Lake View Terrace. State officials wanted City Council approval before providing funding. Councilwoman Ruth Galanter said: “In Venice, where almost everyone complains about almost everything, I have never heard one complaint about Phoenix House.”
