“Red Hill” is the not-so-creative name for the rust-colored ridge of mercury ore near Browning Avenue and La Colina Drive in the north Tustin area.

The ancient landmark is also known as “Cerrito de las Ranas,” or “Hill of the Frogs”--a Spanish-language reference to the thousands of small green amphibians that once lived in a swampy area extending from the hill down to Newport Bay. The sound of croaking frogs could be heard for miles.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Red Hill was mined for its quicksilver. Today, it is surrounded by fashionable homes in an unincorporated area of Orange County.
