WESTMINSTER : School Program Wins Golden Bell Award
A program for at-risk youngsters in the Westminster School District has won a prestigious Golden Bell award from the California School Boards Assn.
At the board of trustees’ regular meeting last week, Supt. Gail Wickstrom announced that the district won the award for a program that helps 1,500 students get counseling, academic help and other special attention.
“I am thrilled to death to inform you that we have been named as having one of the best school programs in the state,” Wickstrom said.
The short-term intervention program is designed as an alternative to suspending troubled students. Under the program, students are removed from their school and sent to Willis Warner Middle School, where they receive counseling, are taught social skills and participate in meetings with parents and district staff, said district spokeswoman Audrey Brown.
The award represents the second Golden Bell that the district has received in two years, Brown said.
