Apartment Proposal Hearings Postponed

Public hearings on a proposed 850-unit apartment complex have been delayed.

Mission Viejo Co. officials asked for a 90-day continuance for their City Council hearing, originally scheduled for Monday, because of the Nov. 8 city election.

Wayne Peterson, a consultant for the developer, wrote the city asking for the delay “in order that the newly constituted City Council may consider the proposal.”

The hearing set before the Planning Commission last week was delayed to Nov. 21.

“This would retain a reasonable time period between a Planning Commission action and the City Council’s consideration of the project,” Peterson wrote.

The housing development is proposed for a 112-acre site off El Toro Road at the city’s northern border. About 50 acres of the parcel are suitable for building.

The project has been opposed by local environmentalists and city officials, who say it would exceed population levels established in a development agreement signed by the company and the city in 1991.
