AMMAN : Clinton in Mideast

Share

President Clinton will arrive in Amman, Jordan, Wednesday to witness the signing of the historic peace accord between Israel and Jordan, another step in the Mideast peace process that began with the agreement between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization signed in Washington last year.

The second step of the ambitious mission will send the American president to Damascus, Syria, on Thursday for talks with President Hafez Assad and other leaders of Israel’s most intransigent enemy. Peace talks between Damascus and Jerusalem are stalemated.

Later that day, the American leader will go to Jerusalem and make an address to the Israeli Parliament. He is expected to applaud the Israeli leadership for taking risks for peace, and is likely to face vocal opposition from political rightists.
