Spotlight on achievers

Tom P. Christian, James N. Winder

Police captains, Brea

Achievement: Christian and Winder recently became captains at the Brea Police Department.

Christian was named head of the investigations and records division in September. A 26-year police veteran, Christian began his career as a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in 1968 and was hired by Brea police two years later. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1980.

Winder will continue to serve as the liaison with Yorba Linda, which receives police services from the Brea Police Department. He joined the Department in 1971 and has served as a detective, sergeant and lieutenant. Winder was named head of the Driving Under the Influence program in 1985.

Jerome Espinoza

College student, Buena Park

Achievement: He was one of five California students to win the 1994 Vikki Carr scholarship. Espinoza will use the scholarship to attend Stanford University, where he will major in biology. He hopes to become a doctor.

He is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, where he excelled in calculus, government, wrestling and photojournalism. He maintained an A average in high school.

Joan Hood

Volunteer for San Juan Capistrano’s Associated Senior Action Program

Achievement: Hood is the voice of companionship and reassurance to many elderly residents in the city. Each day, she telephones frail seniors at home to see if they need aid. She often takes seniors out to dinner.

Hood also works for the city’s Planning Department once a week. She also runs her own crafts store, Crafty Kids.

Recently, the city honored her work with a Community Service Award.

Richard E. Butler

Chief executive officer, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center

Achievement: OrNda HealthCorp., the hospital’s new owner, named Butler as its chief executive officer. He has worked as the hospital’s administrator for the past five years.

Butler began his medical career 20 year ago at Los Angeles County Medical Center shortly after graduating from UCLA with a master’s degree.

John Meyer

Orange County Sheriff’s deputy

Achievement: Meyer was named Officer of the Year by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.

This year, the deputy made 44 drunken-driving arrests. Meyer has made more than 200 such arrests since 1989.
