Regarding pickpocket scams (“News, Tips & Bargains,” Oct. 2), let me tell about one that was tried on me last summer in Paris. While riding up one of the long escalators from the Paris subway, a well-dressed man came up alongside of me, stopped ahead of me and then moved directly in front of me as we got to the top. He then pretended to drop something and bent over, impeding my progress. At the same instant, his accomplice from behind had his hand in my pocket. I luckily managed to disentangle myself without any loss or injury. Incidentally, the fact that I had put a couple of rubber bands around my wallet so it wouldn’t slip out so easily probably helped.
