Bert Blyleven, who earlier this month was hired to become the pitching coach at Cedar Rapids, the Angels’ Class A affiliate, has resigned and will become the director of sports ministry at his church today.

“This just came up,” Blyleven said. “I know the Angels were surprised, but this is God’s way of telling me I shouldn’t leave.”

Blyleven, a member of the Crystal Cathedral church in Garden Grove, said he will work with the church’s youth and organize recreational sports.
