Syd Thrift, let go earlier this month by the Chicago Cubs, was hired by the Baltimore Orioles as director of player development.
Thrift will be in charge of the Orioles’ minor league operations. He replaces Doug Melvin, who left Baltimore to become general manager of the Texas Rangers.
