Paid attendance during the six performances by the Nederlands Dans Theater at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa was 10,049, or 57% of capacity, according to a center spokesman. It was among the lowest turnouts for a multiple-day dance engagement there.

The performances of “Kaguyahime” and shorter repertory by company director Jiri Kylian, which ended Sunday, grossed about $426,173. American Ballet Theatre’s run in September hit a company low of 63% of capacity. But other center-sponsored events, including a jazz series, have had lower attendance, the spokesman said. The Holland-based dance company did break even in terms of its budget, however.

“We are certainly not discouraged, because the Nederlands Dans Theater had not been to the West Coast in 14 years,” Gregory Patterson said Tuesday. “It is a contemporary-based company, and we have to continue to build an audience here for that kind of dance. It will certainly take repeated visits by this and other similar companies . . . .

“We want to continue to find a balance between presenting traditional classical companies, like the Royal Ballet, and companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater or other more contemporary companies,” Patterson said. “We have every intention of continuing to present this and other forms of dance.”
