At the turn of the century, Orange County was home to several popular health spas and resorts.
One of the more famous was a weight-loss compound in the hills above Newport Beach. The resort was advertised in newspapers and attracted many dieters, especially from the East Coast.
A sliver of the San Joaquin Hills near Corona del Mar was named Anti-Fat Canyon.
Costa Mesa was home to a resort that featured several warm-water artesian wells for swimming.
Another popular swimming spot was the San Juan Hot Springs north of San Juan Capistrano.
