OXNARD : Killer of Woman Gets 15 Years to Life

An Oxnard man who shot and killed his former girlfriend on Mother’s Day was sentenced Thursday to 15 years to life in prison for the slaying and an additional five years for using a gun.

A jury in Ventura County Superior Court convicted Gary Michael Rose, 25, of second-degree murder in connection with the May 8 death of 31-year-old Victoria Ramey.

Ramey died about 9:30 p.m. in her home in the 800 block of La Canada Avenue in Oxnard. Prosecutors told the jury that Rose pushed the woman down the stairs of the two-story home and shot her after she lost her balance. The jury decided against a conviction of first-degree murder, which would have added another 10 years to the defendant’s sentence.

Rose’s attorney had asked the jury to find his client guilty of a lesser offense, voluntary manslaughter, saying the defendant is a war veteran who suffers from psychological problems.
