LAGUNA BEACH : Council, School Board Opposed to Prop. 187

Share

The City Council and the school district have both sided against Proposition 187, perhaps the most controversial measure on next week’s statewide ballot.

Citing concerns about the “administrative and financial burdens” the measure could pose for the school district, the Laguna Beach Unified School District board voted unanimously to oppose the proposition last week.

The City Council voted 5 to 0 against the measure last month.

If passed, Proposition 187 would bar illegal immigrants from using public education, social or non-emergency health care services. It would require state and local agencies to report suspected illegal immigrants.

An emotionally worded and detailed resolution against the measure initially proposed by school board President Carl E. Schwarz was replaced by a trimmer version focusing on the burdens the measure would place on the district.

The issue was brought before the council by Councilwoman Lida Lenney. Members of the League of Women Voters and Common Cause spoke against the measure at the council meeting.
